Character Name: Amano Ginji
Series: Getbackers
Age: 16

Physical Description: Ginji is a blond-haired, brown eyed boy. Some people might notice that this is genetically unusual, but truthfully Ginji originally had dark brown hair until the day he first used his abilities (somehow the electrical surge bleached his hair permanently). He is 176 cm tall and weighs 62 kg. He’s pretty thin and doesn’t really have a super-defined body. He’s fit in the sense that he as muscle tone, but he’s no body-builder and has pretty much no body fat. In 3x, Ginji almost always wears special gloves that were created to keep his implants in check. He will only take them off when he’s in a fight.

Personality: Ginji suffers from disassociated identity disorder (also known as multiple personality disorder), that stems from trauma he suffered as a young child and as a psychological result of his mother’s experimentation.

For purposes of discussing Ginji’s disorder and both personalities, they will be given names. The core personality shall be called "Ginji" and the multiple shall be called "Raitei" (translated as “the Thunder Emperor”). Raitei is the name that Ginji’s followers assigned to him as their gang leader and was not intrinsically the name of his alter (Ginji mostly refers to the second personality as “my other self”) however, over time, Raitei has become associated with the destructive force that is that alter.

Ginji is an extremely well meaning person. He really truly cares about people and what they have to go through. He created VOLTS not for his own power but to really help the people of his home. He has strong ideals and strong emotions towards others. He reacts very strongly when people are hurt around him, even if they are not very close to him. He is extremely attached to his friends, going so far as to trust them with is life and all that he has. When he is around those he considers really close more of his potential shows through. If not for the circumstances of his home, Ginji would be a very innocent, naïve and sweet person but the necessity of running the gang has made him put of a front of being a bit stand-offish to strangers. When new people come to town he has to figure out if they are harmful before he can relax around them, but once they turn out to be friendly he’ll relax and start treating them as if they were one of the “family”. If they turn out not to be friendly he will be outright hostile to them and will attempt to fight them if they do not leave his home.

Despite his gang and hostility to outsiders, Ginji is not just a “punk”. He has very strong views about “right” and “wrong”. While he did create a street gang and will attack people who violate the laws he’s set down for his home town (outlined in history section), he does what he does to protect the people who need protecting. He is very against hurting people for fun, though he will hurt anyone who threatens his turf or his people. He is very protective of children (even those not native to Kusadasi) and can be a total goof around them, which tends to make him show even more of the child-like boy just waiting to shine through if ever VOLTS isn’t needed anymore. In Kurasdasi he’ll also be very protective of any glass makers or the leather makers as they are the only source of economy for the island and despite all of the trust that he places in people, Ginji isn’t very “touchy” with people, mostly because of the implants.

Underneath this kind, moral person is Raitei the cold, merciless and mostly emotionless (it's safe to say the only real emotion he feels is anger) alter. Raitei has no qualms about killing people and doesn’t tend to think in terms of “right” and “wrong”. He is an arrogant force who wants only to destroy anything that is in his way. He has his own way of thinking and speaking (when he finds a reason to speak at all that is) that is very different from Ginji. He comes out when Ginji needs him (when there's a real threat to his life or the lives of people that he cares about) but this is a very bad thing. For one, Raitei has no alliances or loyalty. He is neither bad nor good but will lash out at ANYTHING hurting Ginji. This can make him very dangerous. For two, Ginji's mental state is slowly falling apart and the more he's Raitei the more he'll stay Raitei. There’s also the problem that Ginji must face the horrible things Raitei has done the second they switch back. The guilt is almost too much for him to handle and the major cause of most of Ginji’s angst. Despite this, Raitei’s major point is to protect Ginji. He appears when Ginji is suffering and tries to make whatever is making Ginji suffer disappear. It’s a horrible cycle though as the means Raitei uses to do that usually cause Ginji more pain.

Ginji, for the most part, tries to keep his "other self" under control and lives life the best he can. He tends to not let people know that he actually blacks out when Raitei appears and for the most part tries to stay under control of his emotions to keep the alter from appearing. It’s only during extreme emotional distress or a real threat to his life that Raitei actually takes over.

Abilities/Strengths/Weaponry: For 3x, Ginji has implants in his body that allow him to manipulate an electrical current within his body. He uses this to shock people and give him an edge in a brawl. The shock is not fatal, but it does stun his enemy and gives his punches an extra kick. Ginji’s pretty good at hand to hand combat but only in that street brawl kind of way. He wouldn’t be able to fence or anything more “refined” at all. He tends to not use any kind of weapon, but if it comes down to it he does know which end of a knife to hold and can at least fight a badger-dragon so that’s something. Personality wise, Ginji’s a pretty decent leader and has pretty decent intuition about people which does mean that he knows how best to use their strengths and hide their weaknesses when it comes to running and maintaining VOLTS.

Weaknesses: Unfortunately for Ginji he lacks the ability to “turn off” his implants, which means that they are always giving off a current. While the mechanics of the implants protect Ginji from any damage that the constant flow of electricity could wreck on his body having them always on means that he tends to not touch people directly for fear of hurting them. If his gloves are ever taken from him, his complete fear and aversion to hurting innocent people could be used against him. As far as other weaknesses, Ginji has very little education and no knowledge of how the higher classes function, which means he has no ability to “blend in” with higher crowds. His deteriorating mental state is also a negative, of course, as he the more he turns into Raitei the less control he has of himself which makes him feel very, very lame. He also knows next to nothing about technology or mechanical things, even though he does have the implants in his hands. That even extends to the implants in his hands, he has no idea how they work, just that they do and what he can do with them.

History: Ginji was born to a brilliant and extremely eccentric scientist who used him for physical and psychological experimentation at a very young age. Eventually, for one reason or another, she abandoned him, leaving him with electrical implants in his body that vented through his hands and a fractured psyche waiting for the right “trigger” to show its pieces.

Ginji was found in Kusadasi when he was around five or six. He had no memory of where he came from, except that his name was Amano Ginji. He was taken in and raised as someone who belonged in the close-knit society of the poor little town. He was already wearing gloves that hid his implants, but when it was discovered what was under them instead of being shunned more gloves were made for him using the skin of the badger-dragon (which proved to be resilient to the constant electrical onslaught) so that he would be able to keep them under control as he grew.

Ginji grew very close to the people he lived by and became completely assimilated in the culture of the town. When pirates raided the town he learned how to hide and he learned how to help clean up after. Eventually, when he was around 11, pirates attacked the town again, only this time Ginji was stuck in the open with a good friend. The invaders found the two children and brutally attacked and murdered Ginji’s friend in front of him. The horror of the event triggered the appearance of Ginji’s alter, who promptly took over, removed to gloves and used the implants as a weapon for the first time, killing the attacking men.

After that Ginji realized that he had the power to do something about the constant fear that he and his people lived under. There was no need to simply take the raids as a fact of life. He could fight back. By the time he was 14 he formed his very own gang and named it VOLTS after the current that ran through his hands. Instead of just being a group of thugs, VOLTS acts as a civilian police force as Kusadasi, protecting it from raiders and invaders as well as making sure that trade takes place to help keep the town in alive by helping with the process of making glass and leather to barter and trade. Ginji also tries to help with repairing and rebuilding the town and organizes his group to help out wherever they are needed, including gathering Ceylon fruit and other food for the community to share. He also helps the people learn to fight so that when pirates do appear they can defend their home. One of the more popular training exercises is to go on hunts for badger-dragons so that the skin can be brought back for leather and the flesh can be used for food (again to be shared by the whole community). They also keep watch for Kusadsai in case of ships, set up and maintain shelters for elderly and children to hide during pirate raids, and patrol the town in case any trouble stirs.

VOLTS operates under some strict rules based around protecting Kusadasi and the people of Naraka. Ginji does not tolerate his gang acting like local thugs purely for the sake of having power, but expects them to be true to their homes and respectful of the people who are friends or residents of Kusadasi. He considers cold-blood murder or any show of power purely for the sake of power wrong and will not tolerate it in his gang. VOLTS is extremely protective of the Ceylon Trees and badger-dragons and looks down on any “outsiders” hunting or taking the fruit without going through proper channels in Kusadasi. Most outsiders who come to Naraka and take or hunt without permission are given a warning if caught, but if they persist they are met with force. Naraka has extremely limited resources and taking these things without permission is considered stealing to VOLTS. Anything that VOLTS gathers or finds is considered part of the community as a whole and is shared with everyone, even those who are not part of the gang. Children and other defenseless people are never, ever to be touched or hurt by VOLTS members. There is also a chain of command within VOLTS but everyone ends up accountable to Ginji as the gang’s leader. He isn’t cruel or mean to his members but if any of them step out of line and do something that is against the gang’s code he will punish them harshly.

While Ginji does love Kusadasi and all it has come to mean to him, he also realizes that his own mental health is starting to deteriorate. The guilt and shame over the actions of his alter weigh heavily on him. He wants to stay forever in the town and make it into a much better place, but he might have to leave for fear that Raitei will continue to appear and possibly hurt someone. He has not shared this fear with anyone, not even his closest friends, but it is something that is on his mind a lot lately.
